The Adirondacks

I had always wanted to see what lies within that huge green area on the roadmap that covers New York state's Adirondack Park. It's larger than the state of Vermont, and has miles of wild woods that never got turned into farmland like its neighbor's. There are some areas of the Park that sparkle with entertainments created by people, but many towns within the park are small, closer to the land, with a life of their own not dominated by the tourist trade. There's a feeling of timelessness, as if the places had been the same since your childhood memory of summer camp. Lodgings for travelers are mostly well kept grand old inns, B&B's, and, of course, Adirondack style wooden cabins. Our B&B had a Twig Room, with wonderful furniture made of branches, and our hostess served a gourmet breakfast to fortify us for our day's hike. We found a mountain with fascinating rock formations and caves that still had snow patches in July. Views of lakes invited thoughts of future canoe trips, and the cozy living room at the B&B prompted ideas of autumn explorations and winter ski treks ending by a warm fireplace. I'd recommend a detour off the thruway to the Adirondacks in any season!
