Exchanging homes with other travelers means using existing resources, lessening the demand for more hotel construction and large-scale tourist development. It's a way to connect with local culture and appreciate neighborhoods around the world. When you join a home exchange organization, you list your home and gain access to a directory of prospective exchange homes. You and other homeowners contact each other and arrange the exchange. You might even include cars, bikes, and pet care. You become each other's hosts in absentia, giving descriptions of local sights, favorite restaurants and beaches, and babysitter referrals. Your own home is not left empty, and there's someone there to water the plants!
