     DESTINATION: Western Ireland

Western Ireland Inspiration: Spectacular scenery - lush green meadows and rocky hillsides, stone ruins dating from more than 2000 years ago, villages and castles. Warm people and weather, traditional Celtic music, sense of timelessness and history at once.

Green features: Nature destination; muscle-powered activities; preservation of native culture; support for local economy.

Getting there: Fly to Shannon or ferry from Wales or Scotland and then take a bus or rental car.

Western Ireland Getting around: A rental car can take you more places; train and bus rides allow you to focus on the beauty of the countryside instead of the left-side!

Lodgings: B & B's in friendly homes abound; hostels offer simplicity, savings, international contacts, and often family rooms.

Food plan: Breakfasts at B & B's will fill you up for the rest of the day! Most pubs offer light meals, and a variety of restaurants are available. Hostels provide common kitchens for preparing your own meals, and sometimes offer reasonably priced dinners and breakfasts.

Time and season: May and September are apt to have less rain. High season is from June through August, with many special events.

Weather: The Gulf Stream moderates the climate. Rain is frequent but can be light; summers are pleasantly warm. Winters are wet, with little snow or frost. Palm trees grow here!

Activities: Hiking, walking, biking, golfing, exploring historical sites and pubs.
